Super Bowl Fever: Football Food

It's that time of year, when the two best professional football teams in the nation meet up for Super Bowl, the annual over-the-top event that most of us watch from our living rooms. That usually means family and friends gathering to root on their favorites (we are a Steeler family going back to the early 1970s, complete with the original Terrible Towel). It also means serving food to the hungry masses during the four-hour event.

Is a College Education Still a Good Investment?

January 29, 2011 by admin · Comments Off

College StudentThe United States may have a college education bubble that could soon start to burst, possibly as soon as mid-2011. While college may be worth attending if you plan on actually learning something, going to college simply to get a better job is becoming a poor choice, if it ever was a good one -- work experience will likely benefit you more than a degree.

The cost of college is the only thing in the U.S. that never declined in price during the panic of 2008; in fact, it rose in price substantially. Tuition is way up, but the employment situation in the U.S. has deteriorated. All across the U.S., students are graduating in debt with no jobs waiting for them.

According to the National Inflation Association:

"With all of the technological advancements taking place around the world today, the cost for a college education should be getting cheaper

... When the U.S. dollar collapses and the college bubble bursts, NIA predicts we will see a boom in online education where Americans take all of their courses over the Internet from the comfort of their own home at a fraction of the cost of traditional college."

The Secrets of Never Getting Sick

Peeling an OrangeGene Stone spent several years of investigating why some people never get sick. One thing he found was that all of them consciously follow a preventive regimen with consistency and conviction.

He interviewed more than 100 people who seemed never to fall ill, and wrote about the 25 techniques that seemed to work best.

According to ABC News, here are some of the best techniques:

  • Chewing on a clove of garlic
  • Starting off each day with brewer's yeast, which is rich in protein and B vitamins
  • Eating less -- studies suggest that reducing daily calories by as little as 25 percent could have life-lengthening effects
  • Vitamin C

These Foods and Nutritional Deficiencies Can Make You Depressed or Violent

Man Eating a HamburgerThe U.S. is still reeling from another tragedy -- the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and the murder of several civilians during the attempt.

Many are asking what the cause might have been -- whether it was pervasive, over-the-top violent rhetoric in the culture, or simply mental psychosis.

But, even if the former, there is still the underlying cause of mental psychosis to consider.

And what if people are lashing out with such destructive force, at Columbine, Virginia Tech, and now Arizona, not because of what they are hearing, but at least in part because of what they are eating?

Soy infant formula has damaging effects on the development of the brain, but soy is a common ingredient in many processed foods and soy products are being mistakenly touted as a healthy option. Copper toxicity can also cause mental disturbance, and a diet high in grains and low on animal products is also likely to be high in copper. Animal-based omega-3 fats are crucial for fetal brain development.

Writing in her blog, Kimberly Hartke, a publicist for the Weston A. Price Foundation, says:

"Our USDA dietary guidelines currently advise to restrict meat and eggs, in favor of vegetables and grains ... Could our government policies be misguided and leading us down the wrong path? ... Let's stop focusing exclusively on the environmental influences in the home and in our culture, but start looking at the internal influence of the Standard American Diet on mental health."
